The summer in Barcelona brings with it an interruption in the public transport service that will affect access to the city’s beaches.
Line 4 of the metro and T4 of the streetcar will suffer cuts in their routes, which will involve changes in the stops that connect with the popular beaches of Barcelona.
These outages are due to renovation and improvement works on the transportation infrastructure.
From June 26 until July 31, Metro Line 4 trains will not run between Bogatell and Verdaguer stations, leaving out of service some stops that are used by bathers to access the beaches.
From August, trains will stop again at Ciutadella/Vila Olímpica and Barceloneta, but the section between Jaume I and Girona will remain inoperative until August 25.
On the other hand, the T4 streetcar line, which connects Sant Adrià with the Vila Olímpica, will not operate from June 26 to August 31.
In addition, lines T5 and T6 will end their route at La Farinera instead of going to Glòries.
Connections to the coast: access to the beaches
The authorities responsible for transport, such as the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità (ATM), Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) and Barcelona City Council, have assured that the metro will continue to connect to the coast.
However, they recognize that beachgoers will have to seek alternative routes to reach the beaches by public transportation.
They emphasize that the Bogatell stop, which is about 950 meters in a straight line from Nova Icària beach, will continue to operate in July, while the Ciutadella/Vila Olímpica and Barceloneta stations, the closest to the downtown beaches, will reopen in August.
In view of this situation, the frequency of metro lines 1, 2, 3 and 5 will be reinforced during the summer.
These lines will absorb part of the passenger flow coming from Line 4 and the busiest Trambesòs line.
The reason for the cuts
The disruptions to public transport are due to renovation works on Line 4 of the metro, where the track will be replaced along three kilometers.
These works are necessary to put an end to the vibrations that are perceived on the surface in some points of Passeig de Gràcia, Consell de Cent and Ronda Sant Pere.
TMB has plans to replace the tracks on the entire Line 4 in the next few years, and it has yet to be determined whether the next phase of renovation will take place in 2024 or 2025.
As for the tramway, work will be carried out this summer to join the two unconnected circuits of the network, which will mean that the existing and new tracks will converge at Plaça de Glòries.
