In collaboration with the giant Unilever, the City Council of Viladecans has promoted Recicl-Art, a project aimed at raising awareness among young people about the importance of the circularity of waste and the reuse of plastic packaging.
Viladecans, a charming town in the Bajo Llobregat region of Barcelona, has become the epicenter of this unique initiative that fuses art, education and environmental awareness.
The main objective of Recicl-Art is to promote the reuse of plastic containers through art and creativity. In its first edition, the initiative has involved more than 200 high school students from four schools in Viladecans.
This exciting project strategically coincided with the European Week for Waste Prevention, highlighting the relevance of the topic addressed.
Art, creativity and sustainability: the Recicl-Art initiative
The participating schools have carried out a unique creative process by turning carafes, caps, containers and plastic bags into impressive sculptures.
From a majestic whale to a colorful turtle, an enigmatic jellyfish and a mammoth, symbol of Viladecans, these figures have become visual ambassadors of the importance of rethinking our relationship with plastic packaging.
The sculptures find their home in the Cúbic exhibition space, which has been transformed into a visual testimony of Viladecans’ commitment to sustainability.
The mayor, Carles Ruiz, highlights the importance of thinking about how to reuse what we use, underlining the path towards a society that is more aware of its actions and their environmental impact.
The Recicl-Art contest is not only a celebration of art and creativity, but also a reflection of Unilever’s commitment to sustainability. The company has set an ambitious goal of making the plastic packaging of its products 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.
Unilever’s director of communications and sustainability, Ana Palencia, stresses the importance of awakening the creative minds of students and making them aware of the importance of recycling and giving packaging a second use.
Rewarding creativity and sustainability
The culmination of Recicl-Art was a competition among the figures designed by the four participating schools. The jury’s verdict was eagerly awaited, and the four schools were awarded a total of 6,500 euros in prizes.
These funds will be reinvested in sustainability initiatives, thus closing the circle of a contest that not only promotes creativity but also encourages sustainable projects.
Recicl-Art in Viladecans has achieved much more than the creation of impressive sculptures. It has awakened the environmental awareness of young people and involved them in a creative project.
In a world where the problem of plastic waste is pressing, initiatives such as Recicl-Art are a good example.
