Reinterpreting iconic design products with digital printing

Six renowned Spanish industrial design agencies have accepted the challenge of Graphispag, the reference fair in digital printing and visual communication, to reinterpret some of its most emblematic products through the application of digital printing. This initiative gives rise to the exhibition “Hacking the Icons”, which will be held from 1 to 3 October as part of the fair at Fira Barcelona. The exhibition seeks to demonstrate how digital printing can add value to the design and manufacture of products in sectors such as furniture, consumer electronics and home accessories.

Reinterpreting through digital printing

digital printingAmong the objects to be presented at “Hacking the Icons” are the Vigar stool, the Ossby folding bicycle, the Cross aluminum table and the Ulartech electric vehicle charger. Normann Copenhagen’s FlipMirror FlipMirror and Suiff sports technology elastic band kits will also be reinterpreted. The latter allow real-time measurement of physical activity during strength training. The products have been created by industrial design agencies such as Lúcid, ANIMA, Lagranja, BigD, Bambú Studio and Stimulo. These agencies have collaborated with leading graphic technology suppliers. For example, Roland DG, Epson, Fujifilm and Digidelta, to customize and redesign these objects using digital printing.

The customization process shows that digital printing not only improves the external appearance of any product, but also increases its visual impact. In this way, it is possible to surprise users and reinforce the presence of brands. According to the president of the Graphispag Organizing Committee, Xavier Armengou, “customization brings significant added value by enhancing the external appearance of products, generating emotions and, above all, making them unique in their category.”

With this project, Graphispag seeks to connect with designers, companies and professionals from various industrial sectors, motivating them to integrate digital printing into their production processes for mass customization of products and, consequently, increase their value.

Debate, awards and experiences at Graphispag

In addition to the exhibition, Graphispag will offer a series of complementary activities. Among them, a round table in the space “Impulso-Diálogos”, which will be attended by representatives of the Design Institute of Spain (D!OS), manufacturers of graphic technology, industrial designers and companies from different sectors that already incorporate digital printing in their production. At this table, the impact and applications of digital printing in the manufacturing industry will be discussed.

During the event, the “Hacking the Icons” Awards will be presented to the best design of the exhibition, which will be chosen by a vote of the attendees. In addition, visitors will be able to participate in a guided tour of the fair, led by the president of Graphispag, to learn in detail about the printing equipment and technologies that collaborated in the creation of the products presented.

Fira Barcelona: Epicenter of innovation

Fira Barcelona, which hosts Graphispag, is one of the most important fairgrounds in Europe and the main one in Spain. Every year, it organizes international events in different sectors, such as technology, fashion, food and tourism, becoming a meeting point for professionals and companies from all over the world. Graphispag, organized in collaboration with the Graphispack Association, is the only fair of its kind to be held in Spain in 2023. With more than a hundred exhibiting companies and multiple activities to promote innovation and networking, the show expects to exceed 11,000 attendees this year.

The role of Fira Barcelona in promoting events such as Graphispag is essential to boost the economy, as it encourages interaction between professionals and companies from different sectors. Through these events, it encourages the adoption of emerging technologies, such as digital printing, in industries that seek to differentiate themselves and increase competitiveness in the market.

Digital printing: the future of industrial customization

The Graphispag show highlights how digital printing has revolutionized industrial design by enabling the creation of unique and highly customized products. This technology has become a key tool for companies seeking to stand out in saturated markets, offering the possibility of adapting products to the specific needs of their customers.

Mass customization, driven by digital printing, not only improves the visual appearance of products, but can also influence their functionality and performance. This ability to tailor products quickly and efficiently allows companies to respond to market demands in a more agile and effective manner.
