The executive project to renovate the Canòdrom square in Sant Andreu, Barcelona, was approved with the aim of promoting new citizen uses in this space. The objective is to build an agora for public activities and a super children’s play area in this space in the Sant Andreu neighborhood.
Also a dog area, a basketball basket, shaded areas and new green areas.
The main goal is to redevelop this square and turn it into a landscaped space. Adapted to meet the needs of the neighborhood, its neighbors and the community in general.
The renovation was approved by the Governing Committee and is estimated to cost 3.4 million euros. All indications are that work will begin during the first quarter of 2023 and will last about eleven months.
How will be the Canòdrom square in Sant Andreu?
Once renovated, the new Canòdrom square will occupy a total of 8,425 m². Of this area, 450 m² will be set aside for an area where dogs can be kept.
The agora will be used for public events and activities such as open-air cinema.
Along the routes that will be designed in the square, new urban furniture will be installed, so that the paths of the park will be areas to stay and also spaces for walking.
With respect to the large children’s play area, it will be enabled to offer different possibilities for children to play and explore. It will be a network full of fun activities.
It will also have a basketball hoop and several plantings that will ensure large shaded areas. The redevelopment of this space seeks to recall the past of the Sant Andreu neighborhood.
In fact, the name of the square comes from the old Canòdrom building, part of the city’s architectural heritage, which closed its doors in 2006. It is also highly recognized in the neighborhood.
A space for citizen use and enjoyment
The Sant Andreu district of Barcelona, in approving the redevelopment of the square, seeks to turn it into an area of gardens and citizen use where the area’s past is remembered.
The project will also include the remodeling of all interior pavements, vertical signage and lighting.
It seeks the landscaping of the area and builds the irrigation network of four flowerbeds in the upper center of the square. It will also have an exterior mesh that adds up to the total surface area.
As a novelty, it will have a mesh plantation composed of trees with a distance of four to six meters, in order to achieve a “heat island” effect.
According to the City Council, this “island” will reduce the temperature by three to five degrees.
