School playgrounds in Barcelona open on vacations as a safe leisure space

In a gesture that combines safety, inclusiveness and community spirit, a dozen schoolyards in Barcelona will welcome families, children and adolescents during the Christmas vacations.

This initiative, promoted by the Barcelona City Council in collaboration with the Education Consortium, the city’s districts and several educational and social entities, seeks to make the most of school resources to provide an inclusive space for play and coexistence during the vacations.

From December 23, 2023 through January 7, 2024, these courtyards will be open almost every day from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, allowing the local community to enjoy a safe and nearby place for self-contained leisure.

Main objectives of the initiative during the vacations

  • Optimize educational and social use

The opening of school playgrounds during the vacations is intended to enhance both their educational and social aspects. These spaces will be transformed into inclusive places for play and community interaction.

  • To offer an autonomous leisure alternative

To provide children, adolescents and families with a leisure option that they can enjoy independently in a safe and close environment.

Monitoring service and community collaboration

Each schoolyard will have a dedicated monitoring service that will supervise the opening and closing within the established schedules. The monitors will also be in charge of ensuring the proper use of the facilities and fostering positive dynamics among the participants. The active collaboration of the Education Consortium, the districts and various entities reinforces the positive impact of this initiative.
