In the midst of the most beautiful plants, the first botanical bar in the city is born in Barcelona for lovers of vegan, vegetarian and celiac food. It is the bar “La suegra del jardinero”, a really original place, with a particular charm for its decoration and the good treatment to its diners.
The facility opened its doors to the public in December of last year, even in the midst of the pandemic. Even so, it has managed to earn its own space within the gastronomic offer of Barcelona.
Its founders are an Argentine couple who wanted to share their passion for botany and teach people how to take care of plants and learn about their origins.
In fact, in the menu offered to diners, the dishes have botanical names and most of them are decorated with flowers.
The gardener’s mother-in-law: why this name?
It is an original name that attracts a lot of attention and is therefore easily remembered.
The name of the bar comes from an anecdote when carrying plants to the premises, one day an old lady came up to the owners and asked them if they were sent by the gardener.
Without understanding, they simply replied that they were only going to open a botanical bar. After introducing herself, she told them that she was the mother-in-law of the gardener who had abandoned her daughter.
Incidentally, he gave them books that he kept about the gardener’s notes on how to take care of the plants. “They could be of use to them,” the lady said.
Thus was born this unique bar in its kind in Barcelona and throughout Spain. There you can drink and also eat and you can buy all kinds of plants.
Its owners baptized this business model as “business hybridization” that sought to merge the taste for decorative plants with a vegan and vegetarian gastronomic offer with an Argentinean touch.
The specialty of the gardener’s mother-in-law
They are experts in the preparation of vegan burger and bowls. The most requested burger is “La del Tano”.
This homemade hamburger is prepared with 200 grams of lentils, caramelized onion, dried tomato with a smoked touch, carrot, arugula and Argentine provolone.
You can also taste an authentic provoleta with chimuchurri and broccoli, sweet potato sticks with brava sauce, tapas and chipás.
As for drinks, the menu offers herbal drinks and cocktails are decorated with plants.
You may wonder which one is the most requested: it is the emblematic cocktail of the house “La Suegra Fizz”: aromatic, citric and refreshing. It is prepared with lime, gin, cardamom, herbs and ginger. It is served with a eucalyptus plant.
