This week, work began on the improvement and renovation of the Jardins de Sant Pau del Camp, located in the Raval neighborhood in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona. This project aims not only to improve the aesthetics and functionality of the garden, but also to create new play areas and recreational areas that promote community use of this important green space.
A renewed lung for the Raval
The deputy mayor and alderman of the Ciutat Vella district, Albert Batlle, highlighted the importance of this intervention to improve public spaces in the Raval. “This is an action to continue improving this lung of the neighborhood and offer neighbors new playgrounds and rest areas,” commented Batlle. He also highlighted the connection of the gardens with other recently renovated spaces, such as the Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies or cultural facilities such as El Molino and the Arnau Theater, which is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
An ambitious project with three key areas
The works, which will cover an area of 813 square meters, will create three new areas designed for different uses and ages. These areas have been designed to take full advantage of the garden’s slopes and to offer a diverse recreational experience for children and their families.
No to the Macba Expansion: Raval neighbors
1. Children’s play area (257 m²):
This area will have three different spaces:
- PAU Area: In this section, giant letters of the word “PAU” (peace) made of steel and tubular profiles will be installed. Each letter will be a game in itself: the P will function as a ladder for a slide, the A will be a rope net for climbing and the U will be a seesaw.
- Slide area: An enclosed cylindrical slide that promises fun for the most adventurous children.
- Pyramid area: Designed with slopes and climbing holds, it will offer a perfect space for small climbers.
2. Stage and rest area:
In this part of the garden a platform will be created that will function as a stage, located near the historic chimney of the former Nicolau Tous i Soler Textile Factory. With protection level C, this chimney will be a landmark in the space. Some flowerbeds will be eliminated to create more free standing areas and bleachers will be added to encourage community use. 3. Circuit area:
This space will have an undulating pavement, designed for children to play with bicycles or wheeled vehicles. The circuit will connect to the previously renovated areas of the garden, offering a continuous and dynamic route.
An investment to improve the quality of life
The budget earmarked for this project is 1,149,255 euros, and the works are expected to be completed before the summer of 2025. This investment reflects Barcelona City Council’s commitment to improving public spaces in the Ciutat Vella district, especially in areas where the supply of parks and playgrounds is limited.
El Raval Restaurant: a piece of Barcelona in Texas
In addition to improving the space available to the residents of Raval, this renovation also has the potential to revitalize community life in the neighborhood. The new play areas, together with the stage-like platform, will allow activities for both children and adults, encouraging socialization and the use of public space.
One more step towards a more inclusive and livable city
The Jardins de Sant Pau del Camp renovation project is not only an aesthetic improvement, but a strategic intervention to make Barcelona’s public spaces more accessible, inclusive and functional. This effort is part of a broader plan by the City Council to revitalize the Ciutat Vella district and improve the quality of life of its residents.
El Raval, a neighborhood in Barcelona, will be the name of the new Cupra car.
With new play areas, recreational zones and a clear commitment to community life, these gardens will become a meeting point for neighbors of all ages. As Barcelona moves forward in its urban transformation, projects like this one highlight the importance of green spaces and the creation of friendly environments for families and the community at large.
