The Mossos d’Esquadra, through an aquatic unit, will be in charge of the security of the America’s Cup in its 37th edition in Barcelona.
In this way, the Catalan police will elaborate the security strategy under the direction of commissioners Eduard Sallent and Carles Anfruns, in order to define the respective responsibilities of each security body.
This plan will be joined by all the security forces of Catalonia, each according to their competences.
Security at the America’s Cup Sailing 2024
The main objective of the police force is to ensure that the sporting event is carried out in an orderly, safe and peaceful manner for participants, visitors, fans and residents.
The fact that the 2024 America’s Cup will be held in Barcelona is an event of great importance for the city.
The plan will make very clear the responsibilities of all the actors involved in the security of the event.
That is, the role of the Generalitat, the City Council, the Government, the organizers of the competition, Civil Protection, the Emergency Medical System, the Fire Department, private security and the different police forces.
About the sporting event
The Cup will be held from August 22 to October 6, 2024 in the Catalan capital.
This nautical competition is considered the third most important sporting event in a territory, after the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
The Cup trophy is the oldest in the history of the sport (1851) and will arrive in Barcelona along with its latest winner, Grant Dalton’s Emirates Team New Zealand.
Some local consultants even compare the celebration of the America’s Cup in Barcelona with the sum of ten editions of the Mobile World Congress.
The project will have an initial investment of just over 70 million euros. However, the organizers indicate that both the pre-tests and the final test will have an impact of around 1,000 million euros on the Catalan economy.
For its part, the police of the Generalitat will also be in charge of maritime security, taking control of the waters through the maritime police vessels.
In fact, this will be the first time that these maritime vessels will assume prevention and security tasks within the framework of the sporting event.
Last summer 2022 was the first opportunity for the Mossos Maritime Police to be deployed throughout the territory.
The news is very relevant considering that in March 2019, the National Judicial Police Coordination Commission by majority agreed that the Civil Guard was in charge of assuming all police functions at sea.
