More than 7,000 m² of facilities for the La Marina neighborhood
The expansion of the Polideportivo Municipal La Marina has finally been approved, marking the start of an ambitious construction project that will transform the sports center into a new Municipal Sports Center (CEM). With an investment of over 14 million euros, work is expected to begin in April 2025 and be completed in early 2027. This new facility will respond to a historical need of the residents of La Marina del Port, who have been calling for a comprehensive sports space in their neighborhood.
The project, promoted by the Barcelona Esports Institute (IBE) and coordinated by Barcelona d’Infraestructures Municipals (BIMSA), seeks to offer a modern, functional and accessible space designed to promote sport and physical activity in a wide range of disciplines.
A first-class sports venue
The new CEM La Marina will have a total area of 7,010 m², of which 4,980 m² correspond to the expansion, and will have a multilevel structure: ground floor, two upper floors, a rooftop floor and two subway levels. The expanded area will be divided into 2,250 m² dedicated to a fitness center and 2,730 m² dedicated to an aquatic center, which will include two swimming pools: one 25 x 12.5 m and a complementary 6 x 12.5 m pool. This space will be integrated with the existing sports center, creating a visual and functional continuity that ensures harmony between the different areas of the complex. The swimming pools will be at the level of the existing pavilion track, which will minimize the visual impact and better adapt to the surroundings.
Sustainable design and modern materials
The structure of the new building will be built with sustainable materials and an energy-efficient design. In the subway floors, reinforced concrete slabs and columns will be used, while the upper floors will be made of structural wood elements and laminated steel profiles. The facades will have a prefabricated modular system, with aluminum carpentry and sheet metal cladding, and the first floor will be transparent to maximize natural light. The swimming pool will be located on a lower level, but will have excellent natural lighting, providing a pleasant and sustainable experience for users.
Response to a historic neighborhood demand
This expansion of the CEM La Marina not only responds to the need for a comprehensive sports space in La Marina del Port, but also aligns with Barcelona’s municipal sports facilities renovation plan. This project, promoted by the IBE, aims to increase the supply of sports facilities in five of the city’s ten districts, including Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts, Nou Barris, Sant Andreu and Sant Martí. In addition to CEM La Marina, other centers such as CEM Sagrera, CEM Espronceda, Pavelló Municipal l’Illa and Centre Municipal de Vela are also under construction, and projects for Pavelló Municipal Glòries and Pavelló Model will begin soon.
A project that improves the quality of life in Barcelona
The new CEM La Marina will offer multiple spaces for sports and community wellness, from fitness areas and swimming pools to directed activity rooms and common areas. This expansion will not only improve the quality of life for residents, but will also consolidate La Marina as a benchmark for high-quality sports infrastructure in the city.
