The well-known and historic Palacio del Cinema cinema, which has been closed for more than 20 years, will cease to be a theater and will be converted into an office building with a commercial space.
The cinema is owned by the Balañá chain and is located at Via Laietana 53.
The adaptation work has already begun and although the internal repairs will take a long period of time, the objective is to make this closed facility useful.
This new life for the theater coincides with the renovation of the Via Laietana, which will begin in March 2022.
The final construction will have four floors plus the ground floor, as well as a basement.
On the upper floors there will be several offices and at the foot of the street a commercial space will be adapted for commercial use.
The historic Palazzo del Cinema cinema
The Palace opened its doors to the public on March 31, 1923, almost a century ago.
Initially known as Pathé Palace, it was renamed Palacio del Cinema in 1940.
The opening screening was Florián hits the bull’s eye and La mujer del faraón (Pharaoh’s Wife).
By the end of March 1961, the cinema caught fire and was completely destroyed. The only thing that was saved was its façade.
It was finally reopened on October 20, 1962. Years later and before closing its doors in 2001, it presented the film Yamakasi.
From then on, its facilities were occupied by strikers, and it was the scene of protests and forced evictions.
Now, as the years go by, it will come back to life, not as a movie theater, but as a commercial and office building.
