By the first quarter of 2024, it is expected that the Teatro Principal, the oldest theater in Barcelona, will be able to raise its curtain again.
For this purpose, an investment of 25 million euros is expected, approved by the municipal commission in agreement with the promoters.
The purpose of the investment is to recover the current building and use it for the implementation of a cultural project in the audiovisual field on immersive art for integration with the public.
In order to provide it with an adequate infrastructure, the historic and emblematic theater needs to be completely refurbished and turned into an international reference.
The future of the Teatro Principal
These 11,000 m2 will also be used to offer the public exhibitions with large-format, immersive works.
With these characteristics, it will be a unique venue in Europe that will enter the international art circuits on a par with New York or London.
The promoters of the initiative will be in charge of the remodeling project. The aim is to preserve the current façade built in the mid-19th century.
The main reform focuses on making an urban modification, since the theater is made up of two plots, one of which will be used for sports.
They also seek to preserve the heritage character of the building, although it will have six halls with a total capacity for 2,520 people.
The rooms will communicate with an interior space as an open passageway that will connect the Rambla and Lancaster Street.
Barcelona’s Teatro Principal has been closed since 2017, even before the start of the health crisis.
