The Barcelona City Council will soon complete the comprehensive repair of the vegetation and furniture of the superblock of Sant Antoni.
The works include the recovery and cleaning of the damaged street furniture and will end with the repainting of the roadway.
The objective of the comprehensive maintenance plan was to restore nearly 24,000 m2 of public space for pedestrian use and community life.
The maintenance works have been brought forward after carrying out the first phase of implementation of the superblock that began in 2018, through the urbanization of the surroundings of the Sant Antoni Market, a new square and more living and pedestrian space.
The superblock of Sant Antoni: more life, more neighborhood
The successful model of public space in the superblock is aimed at opening more spaces for community meetings and integration.
It also seeks to maintain the quality standards of the public space, as well as to replace degraded and damaged urban furniture.
Since last December, wooden benches and chairs, lighting, metal and wooden planters, traffic lights, water fountains, tables, bleachers, wooden platforms, litter garbage cans and artificial stone balls have been restored.
The works that have been carried out have been the cleaning of the urban furniture elements with high pressure equipment. Especially those that were marked by graffiti vandalism.
They have also been repainted, platforms damaged by vandalism have been repaired, and carpentry, locksmithing and masonry work has been carried out on a case-by-case basis.
To complete the works, the roadways will be repainted during the next few weeks: pavement painting, playground equipment and horizontal signage.
The yellow paint that is still visible on some sidewalks will also be removed with a panot treatment.
The final works will take about four more weeks.
About investment in the area
In total, all the maintenance and painting works of the superblock have represented an investment of 125,000 euros.
With respect to the green environment, two planting actions were carried out last year, with the replacement of 1,760 plants of different shrub species in some sections of the area.
In the same way, the superblock has also benefited since November last year from the improvement brought about by the deployment of Cuidem Barcelona.
This new model, which contemplates a greater investment and more workers involved in it, has made it possible to adapt different elements in this space for various community uses.
The final works will soon be completed so that the city will have a renovated stage and a wonderful space to share with friends and family in the midst of a green and completely restored environment.
Enjoy it as an iconic part of the Catalan capital.
