Despite a drop in the world ranking, the University of Barcelona remains firmly at the top of the national ranking, consolidating its position as the best university in Spain according to the influential Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai ranking.
The University of Barcelona, affectionately known as the UB, is not only a beacon of knowledge in Catalonia, but also stands among the top 300 universities in the world in 2023, according to the prestigious ranking.

The Shanghai ranking distinction is no small achievement. For the twenty-first consecutive year, Harvard University, an academic colossus in the United States, rises to the top of the world.
It is closely followed by Stanford University, maintaining its position in second place. These giants are joined by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which consolidates its position on the third step of the podium. It is a podium that is ironically dominated by U.S. institutions.
The University of Barcelona: national leader in the prestigious Shanghai rankings
UB has proven to be an undisputed leader in Spain. Although it has lost some positions in the world ranking compared to previous years, its influence and academic excellence continue to shine brightly at the national level.
In 2021 and 2022, UB ranked in the top 151-200 academic institutions worldwide. However, in the latest analysis, the UB has dropped to the 201-300 range, maintaining its leading position in Spain, where only the University of Granada is in the same bracket.
Other Spanish universities also stand out on the international academic scene. In the top 301-400 institutions in the world are the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Complutense University of Madrid, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona and the University of Valencia.
