Month by month it is evident that the use of public transport in Barcelona is recovering.
This is recorded in the latest balance of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, ATM, indicating that trips reached 83% of the precovid volume.
In this way, public transportation users in the Metropolitan Area returned to using the service.
With the pandemic, its use was reduced, since the majority of users, for fear of contagion, preferred to use bicycles, motorcycles or walk.
During the first half of 2022, a total of 450 million trips (83% of travel volume) were recorded in Barcelona and surrounding municipalities.
For the same period but in 2019, there is a record of 541 million trips in Barcelona and surrounding municipalities.
Comparatively, the balance is positive, as the figures for 2022 in the first half of the year are close to the volume recorded in 2019.
Trends in the use of public transport in Barcelona
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s balance sheet determined that the data is improving month by month.
They indicate an upward trend towards recovery of the service volume of past years.
The report indicates that this is an average. In other words, during the first half of 2022, there will still be 17% fewer users.
However, if analyzed month by month, there are periods in which the figure is lower compared to 2019.
For example, in the case of June 2022 the volume of users who used public transport was only 10% lower compared to that recorded in June 2019.
