The Autonomous University of Barcelona, UAB, created the first Japanese Studies Office to promote research and the study of Japanese language and culture.
In fact, the UAB is the university with the most Japanese students in the whole of Spain and the first to host official exams in this language.

It is also the only one with a Sakura Network office of Japanese studios. And the only one that hosts the headquarters of the official cultural institutions of China, Japan and South Korea.
The office is located on the Bellaterra campus, in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Research Module A of the UAB Research Park), and is recognized by the Japan Foundation, an institution attached to the government of Japan.
It is worth mentioning that it will start organizing Japanese language courses and other activities as of February 2023.

Office of Japanese Studies at the UAB
The Sakura Network is under the auspices of the Japan Foundation, a governmental institution dedicated to promoting Japanese culture and language around the world. It also aims to seek continuous improvement in the teaching of Japanese studies.
The new office will allow the University staff dedicated to the teaching of Japanese studies to have a direct channel of relationship with the Japan Foundation.

The same Research Module A integrates the headquarters of the King Sejong Institute, the Confucius Institute Barcelona and the South Korean and Chinese institutions. They perform a task equivalent to that of the Cervantes Institute of the Spanish government or the Institut Ramon Llull of the Generalitat.
