Barcelona prepares to bid farewell to 2023 and welcome 2024 with a unique and unprecedented spectacle that combines cutting-edge technology with a celebration of life and the city’s connection to the sea.
The production company Groupe F will carry out an amazing visual presentation with 470 drones that will rise 250 meters high to illuminate the sky of Montjuïc.
This show, entitled ‘Deseo Barcelona’, is a tribute to the city and its relationship with the sea, which will take a prominent role in the coming year with the celebration of the America’s Cup Sailing.
The celebration will begin at 9:00 p.m. on December 31 with a pre-show that will set the Avenida de Maria Cristina with music and lighting.
Due to the drought situation and the pre-emergency phase, the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc will remain closed. However, at 11:00 pm, a large ball of light, suspended 75 meters high, will be lit to preside over the party.
At midnight, when the chimes announce the arrival of the new year, the drones will draw a bunch of grapes in the sky, recalling the tradition of eating the twelve grapes for good luck.
Each chime will be accompanied by pyrotechnic effects and the dozen grapes will be followed by a show of technology, light and fire to celebrate the entrance to 2024.
A unique show full of light and color
The show is an artistic expression of the New Year’s wish, encapsulating feelings of hope, future and the yearning for a better life. Pyrotechnics, light and music will represent the imaginary of the city and the desires of its inhabitants.
They will use iconic images such as the Barcelona tile, the Barcelona skyline, the fabric of L’Eixample and modernism. In addition, references will be made to highlights that 2024 will bring, such as the Tàpies Year and the America’s Cup.
Groupe F, directed by Christophe Berthonneau, a pyrotechnics expert, combines pyrotechnics in its shows with dance, street arts and special effects. This year, Montjuïc will be the stage where Barcelona will celebrate the turn of the year with this unique show.
Midnight Show
The event will feature a show before midnight and admission is free and unlimited.
In terms of mobility, temporary disruptions have been announced. From midnight on December 31 until 2:00 a.m. on January 1, parking is prohibited in the area of the celebration.
In addition, from 7:00 pm on December 31, the avenues Reina Maria Cristina, Rius i Taulet, Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia and Plaza de Espanya will be closed to traffic when the concentration of public makes it necessary, in any case before 9:00 pm.
