The Gaudí Awards are the Catalan Oscars. It is the great film festival that on a magical winter night and as every year, recognizes the best films of Catalonia.
The big party highlighted the film “Alcarràs” as the star of the night and awarded outstanding talents, showing the audience which films are recommended to watch throughout the year.
In addition to the Best Film award, other awards were also given in the categories of Best Direction, Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Management and the Audience Award.
The winners of the Gaudí00 Awards
Unquestionably, the big winner of this year’s Awards has been Alcarràs, a film that was nominated as a candidate for the golden statuette in the United States.
Likewise, the Catalan Academy of Cinema also highlighted a great list of films such as “Pacifiction” and “One year, one night”, in the framework of a beautiful gala where tribute was paid to the recently deceased Agustí Villaronga, director of the iconic “Pa negre”.
Best Film Award: Alcarràs
Although in the end Alcarràs will not compete at the Oscars, the Gaudí awards did revalidate the success of this film, which will surely be one of the most relevant Catalan films in history.
Carla Simón’s film had 14 nominations, of which it won five awards, including the crown for Best Catalan Film.
Award for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Non-Catalan Film to Pacifiction.
After collecting several awards at Lumière in France, Albert Serra, director of Pacifiction received these awards.
Award for Best New Director, Best Female Lead and Best Male Lead for “Suro”.
“Suro” took the collection of three awards for three different people. He started as a new director for the Basque director Mikel Gurrea. Vicky Luengo was awarded as best female protagonist and Pol López as best male protagonist. The film tells the story of a couple of architects from Barcelona (the two award-winning actors) who go to live in the Empordà when they find out they are expecting a child.
Award for Best Newcomer: Carla Quílez Alonso for “La maternal”.
Carla Quílez, 14 years old, won the statuette thanks to her performance as a pregnant girl who enters a juvenile center.
Best Documentary Film Award for “The Yellow Roof”.
Isabel Coixet, an icon of Catalan cinema dealing with sexual abuse and silence.
Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Editing and Best Art Direction for “One Year, One Night”.
Directed by the Basque Isaki Lacuesta. It tells the story of the terrorist attack on the Bataclan concert hall in Paris, written from the book by the survivor of the attack, Ramón González, Paz, amor y Death metal.
