On October 1, the Department of Territory of the Generalitat has taken an important step in the progress of the Metro Line 9 (L9/L10) project with the resumption of works at the future Sanllehy station, a key stop on the central section of this line. The main objective of this resumption of work is to complete the excavation of the station shaft and the construction of the gallery that will connect it to the central section tunnel.
A new advance in the L9/L10
The works, which are focused on the Sanllehy square, will require the temporary closure of the entire square, a space that will be occupied by machinery and acoustic screens to minimize the noise impact in the area. This means that, during the first few weeks, the playground equipment, street furniture and pergola that currently form part of the square’s surroundings will be removed.
Barcelona prepares for the start of works on metro lines L9 and L10
However, not all areas will be affected. On the mountain side of the square, neither the sidewalks nor the pedestrian crossing will be occupied, and bus stop number 897 will continue to operate normally. The greatest alterations will occur in the service cordon of Pompeu Fabra Avenue, where the crosswalks on Mare de Déu de Montserrat Avenue and on the Besòs side of the square will be eliminated due to the expected long duration of the works.
Current status of the work
So far, 42% of the civil works at Sanllehy station have been completed, and the excavation of the shaft has reached 66% of the 78 meters planned. The new phases of work will make it possible to complete this shaft and advance in the construction of the gallery that will connect the station with the tunnel of the central section of the L9/L10.
Metro L9 to be ready by 2028
During the first few months of this stage, surface work will be carried out, including the installation of sound-absorbing screens and other preparatory work that will facilitate the resumption of shaft excavation.
Prevention and control measures
At the same time, a campaign of auscultation and inspection of buildings near the construction site has been launched to guarantee safety and minimize the possible impacts of construction activities. These measures, initiated in September, are essential to maintain strict control over the development of the works and to ensure that the appropriate prevention protocols are followed.
Impact on mobility
The execution of the works in Sanllehy square will also affect mobility in the area. The exit and entry of construction vehicles will take place along carrer de Sardenya towards avinguda Mare de Déu de Montserrat, which could generate some congestion at certain times. However, a traffic plan has been designed to minimize inconvenience to residents and road users. The temporary closure of some areas is an unavoidable measure to ensure the safety of pedestrians and to facilitate the progress of the works. However, citizens who transit through this area can rest assured that the measures taken seek to minimize the impact on the daily life of the neighbors.
A crucial project for the future of mobility in Barcelona
Metro Line 9 is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in Barcelona, and the Sanllehy station is a key element in connecting the central section, which will facilitate transport between different areas of the city. Once the works are completed, this station will not only improve mobility in the area, but will also provide a better connection between the north and south of the city, facilitating access to various key points in Barcelona. With 42% of the civil works completed and the excavation of the shaft at 66%, this phase is expected to be a decisive step towards the completion of this section of the metro, which remains a priority for the Generalitat. The works will not only improve connectivity, but also form part of a broader project to modernize public transport in the city.
