On Wednesday August, the Mossos d’Esquadra made an arrest on the AP-7 highway near Salt (Girona), 60 kilometers from the French border. The detainees were two individuals accused of stealing a bag at El Prat airport containing valuable jewelry and watches. The contents of the bag are estimated to be valued at 8.5 million euros, La Vanguardia reported.
The robbery occurred at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Emirates airline check-in line at Terminal 1 of El Prat airport. The victim was a family standing in line when their purse, which also contained thousands of euros in cash, was snatched.
The victims quickly reported the incident to the authorities, who reviewed security footage to identify the thieves. Airport cameras were able to detect the exact moment of the robbery and the escape of the criminals in a navy blue Ford Focus rental car. It was also possible to obtain the vehicle’s license plate number.
At 21:00 hours, a patrol car of the Mossos d’Esquadra stopped the vehicle on the AP-7, near Salt (Girona). Officers arrested the two people in the Focus, a man and a woman, and recovered the stolen purse. Among the stolen jewelry was a 47-carat ring valued at more than four million euros, according to Efe news agency.
It is important to note that initial assessments of the theft are often linked to the victim’s statement. On previous occasions, there have been cases where the value of a stolen item was overestimated at the time of the incident. For example, last year in Barcelona, a stolen watch was initially reported to be valued at €800,000, but later the Mossos d’Esquadra confirmed that its actual value was €43,000.
