Next Friday, May 31, 2024, Barcelona’s iconic Passeig de Gràcia will be transformed into an open-air musical stage thanks to a unique initiative that promises to fill the city with melodies.
In collaboration with the Fundació Occidente, the Maria Canals International Music Competition has organized a special event: ten grand pianos will be installed along this emblematic avenue in Barcelona and in the Salvador Espriu Gardens.
This project, under the name “Your city is filled with pianos”, offers citizens the opportunity to play these magnificent instruments from eleven in the morning until eight in the evening.
An opportunity for all
The idea behind this initiative is clear and powerful: to democratize access to music and the piano, to break down barriers and bring this art form to all people, regardless of their level of ability.
According to Ignacio Gallardo Bravo, director of Fundación Occidente, “We want people to come, to dare to try and live the experience of creating music”. This event is not only intended for professional musicians, but also invites students, amateurs and anyone who is curious about playing the piano in a public space.
Passeig de Gràcia becomes a musical stage in the heart of Barcelona
Passeig de Gràcia will have music as a protagonist. Specific piano locations are carefully selected to maximize accessibility and visual impact. The pianos will be located at the following addresses:
- Passeig de Gràcia, 2 (in front of Occident)
- Passeig de Gràcia, 17 (in front of Wework)
- Passeig de Gràcia, 38-40 (Right side, looking at Hotel Mandarin I Galeria ART)
- Passeig de Gràcia, 43 (in front of Casa Batlló)
- Passeig de Gràcia, 74 (in front of the Dior store)
- Passeig de Gràcia, 79 (in front of the Pinko store)
- Passeig de Gràcia, 92 (in front of La Pedrera)
- Passeig de Gràcia, 99 (in front of the Montblanc store)
- Passeig de Gràcia, 110 (in front of the Macson store)
- Jardinets de Salvador Espriu, 123 (between La Font and the elevator of the SABA parking lot)
Each of these places will become a meeting point where music will bring people together, transforming the daily lives of passersby into an unforgettable experience.
A project with history and future
This is not the first time that the streets of a city have been filled with pianos. This initiative has traveled throughout Spain, visiting cities such as Madrid, Bilbao, Seville, Cadiz, Malaga, Salamanca, and many more.
Each stop on this musical route has allowed people to connect with the music in a direct way. After Barcelona, the pianos will move to Bilbao, where they will continue their mission to democratize music on June 21.
