The European Monitoring Agency for Drugs and Drug Addiction, EMCDDA, conducted a study in 2021 in 75 European cities in 25 countries to determine what cannabis residues were detected in their wastewater.
With these analyses, the Agency sought to determine the drug use behaviors of the inhabitants of each city.
In this regard, Barcelona turned out to be the European city with the highest content of cannabis residues in its wastewater. In fact, it tripled the consumption figures of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, which ranked second on the list.
Cannabis waste in the Catalan capital
The study indicated that an average of about 450 milligrams per day per 1,000 inhabitants were found in the wastewater of the Catalan capital during 2021.
The Agency also revealed that in the last two years marijuana consumption is growing in Barcelona.
Regarding cocaine consumption, the data concluded that 665 milligrams per 1,000 inhabitants were found in Barcelona. In the case of Amsterdam the finding was 886 milligrams.
For its part, the European Drugs Agency has estimated that around 22 million people across Europe regularly use marijuana.
This represents a historical record on the European continent, since in all countries the increase of traces of different drugs in wastewater was evidenced.
Another finding of the study was that cocaine is increasingly present in Eastern European cities.
