In-Edit Barcelona Festival to open with film about Bad Gyal

The In-Edit Barcelona Festival, dedicated to music documentary film, will hold its 22nd edition from October 23 to November 3, 2024 at the Mooby Aribau cinemas in Barcelona. The show promises to be one of the most exciting events of the year for music and film lovers. This year, the festival will open with the screening of the documentary “La Joia”, focused on the rising career of Bad Gyal, one of the most influential artists on the music scene today.

This is a documentary directed by David Camarero, which follows Alba Farelo, better known as Bad Gyal, in her transformation from local star to global icon. The film captures key moments in her career and her struggle to stay true to her identity in a complex industry, documenting her time in cities such as Barcelona, Miami, Santo Domingo, Las Vegas, Milan and Paris.

The opening screening will be attended by Bad Gyal herself, which adds a special attraction for the artist’s fans. After its premiere at In-Edit, “La Joia” will be available in theaters and on the Amazon Prime platform. This opening marks just the beginning of a festival loaded with interesting and relevant proposals in the world of documentary music.

In-Edit Barcelona Festival

In-Edit 2024 will not only stand out for its inauguration, but also for a program full of big names in music and captivating documentaries. Among the most anticipated content is a special session dedicated to the Spanish group Estopa, who will present a documentary about their concert at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona in July this year. In addition, works dedicated to artists such as Liberato, the enigmatic Neapolitan singer; June Carter; Ani DiFranco; and iconic bands such as Mogwai, Pavement, The Black Keys, Blur, and Die Antwoord, among others, will be screened.

The festival also offers a platform for national artists and bands. This year, among the outstanding local productions is the directorial debut of Antón Álvarez (C. Tangana), who will present a documentary about the flamenco guitarist Yerai Cortés. In the Moritz Presenta section, there will be documentaries about the life and career of Spanish artists such as Carles Sabater (Sau), the band Los Negativos, or the legendary concert hall Zeleste.

One of the great innovations of this edition will be the screening of “Eno”, a generative documentary about Brian Eno, one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. This work, directed by Gary Hustwit, will be remixed live during the festival, using artificial intelligence, which will create a unique and unrepeatable experience for attendees. This will be the first time this format is presented in Europe, which adds a special attraction to the event.

Special galas

Highlights of the festival also include three special galas. The first is the screening exclusively for cinemas of the Estopa documentary, produced by Sony Music Vision and in collaboration with Movistar Plus+, which commemorates the band’s 25th anniversary. The second is the preview of the documentary “Supersubmarina: Cien maneras de volver” (Supersubmarina: One Hundred Ways to Return), which will feature the Andalusian band. Finally, the festival will premiere the first episode of the series “From Dance to God”, an original production by In-Edit Films for the CaixaForum+ platform.

In addition to the physical screenings, In-Edit will also have an online venue at CaixaForum+, where 15 documentaries from the program for Spain and Portugal will be available free of charge from November 18 to December 2. This ensures that the festival can reach an even wider audience, beyond those who can attend in person.

Documentaries and more documentaries

Previously announced documentaries include titles such as “Blur: To The End”, “Devo”, “The Stones And Brian Jones”, “This Is A Film About The Black Keys”, “Marisol, Call Me Pepa”, and “Forbidden To Win Eurovision”, to name just a few. The wide variety of songs and musical styles represented ensures that there is something for everyone.

In short, the 22nd edition of In-Edit Barcelona promises to be one of the most complete and diverse to date, with a special focus on local and international artists, and with the presence of documentaries that explore both musical legends and new emerging talents. The festival remains true to its spirit of offering a unique space where music and film meet to create unforgettable experiences.
