Thanks to a campaign of neighbors who defended its recovery and new uses, the last telephone booth in Barcelona returned restored to the neighborhood of Sant Genís dels Agudells.
But with different functions to the original ones: now this cubicle with roof, doors and glass coverings, will be a book exchange point, with wifi. It will also be an information screen for municipal activities and a recharging point for mobile devices.
It is now called “bibliocabina” and is located exactly in Meguidó square.
It has capacity for up to 200 specimens and is being managed by the Casa Groga Civic Center.
The cabin now has anti-vandalism glass and anti-graffiti protection. It also has its own lighting, automatic door and better ventilation.
The last telephone booth in Barcelona
The cabin with door, number 8595-A, was located at 2 Lledoner Street. It was the last one of these characteristics of the 500 that there were in Barcelona.
The use as a book exchange point was suggested through a neighborhood consultation conducted in 2017 among neighborhood residents.
Since then, the Barcelona City Council and Telefónica de España agreed to transfer it in order to give value to this unique and historical element and turn it into an element of collective memory of the city.
Thus, in March 2021 the cabin was removed from its original location to be restored at the Municipal Institute of Urban Landscape, IMPU.
All the missing and damaged parts were replaced in order to preserve the original model and all its original structure.
