As of March 1, 2022, the transformation of Via Laietana will begin, with the aim of widening sidewalks for pedestrians, making bicycle lanes, strengthening local commerce and green space.
It will also allow the connection between the Gòtic and Born neighborhoods.
The goal is to turn this Barcelona street into a more sustainable, friendly and functional space.
For its part, the Ecology, Urban Planning, Infrastructure and Mobility Commission has been in charge of approving the reform.
The agreement was reached after a participatory consensus among merchants, neighbors, authorities and other stakeholders involved in the project.
Via Laietana transformation works
The start of the works contemplates the restriction to one lane of traffic in the mountain direction. Access will only be allowed for the neighborhood, parking and some services that will be able to reach Francesc Cambó Avenue.
On the other hand, in the direction to the sea, one lane for private vehicles and one lane for bus traffic will be provided.
The sidewalks will be widened to 4.05 meters from Plaza Urquinaona to Plaza Antonio López.
A large square will be built in Antoni Maura, in order to connect the Cathedral with the Santa Caterina Market.
New squares will be created right at the crossroads with the main axes of Ciutat Vella (crossroads with Jonqueres street and at the crossroads of l’Àngel and Antonio López squares).
The trees will be reinforced and the lighting will be improved.
