The Tres Xemeneies del Besòs, iconic architectural structures by the sea on the north coast of Barcelona, will be a business center and a space that would house the operations of a hub dedicated to the audiovisual sector.
These remnants of the industrial era have patiently awaited a project that would restore them to their former glory and give them a new purpose.
According to reports, the future of this iconic site appears to be taking shape, marking a milestone in the transformation of the last undeveloped stretch of coastline near Barcelona.
In early November, the Generalitat is expected to formalize an agreement to acquire part of the Tres Xemeneies, including the engine room, turbine hall and surrounding land.
Although the property will be transferred free of charge, the regional administration will assume the necessary investment to maintain and remodel the building, which will be used as a public facility, in accordance with the Urban Development Plan approved for the area.
The Audiovisual Park in the Three Xemeneies of Besòs
A business center and an audiovisual park are planned for the turbine hall. This hub will have high quality sets and screening rooms, as well as training rooms, offices and other facilities for the creation and exhibition of audiovisual, digital and video game industry productions.
This ambitious project would be called “Catalunya Media City” and is already beginning to take shape in official documents. This initiative marks an exciting step forward in the expansion of the audiovisual industry in Catalonia.
The city of Barcelona is consolidating its position as an important center for this industry worldwide, and this project promises to take it to the next level.
A new horizon for the Audiovisual Industry in Catalonia
Mike Blackman, managing director of the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) audiovisual technology show, recently highlighted the enormous potential of the audiovisual industry in Catalonia.
Both he and Miquel Rutllant, president of the Audiovisual Cluster of Catalonia, underlined the growing relevance of this industry at a global level and the fundamental role it plays in people’s daily lives.
It is not just film and television, but an industry that is constantly growing thanks to telecommuting, mobile telephony and new technologies such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality.
This Tres Xemeneies project, along with efforts to attract international companies and foster local talent, underscores Barcelona’s vision of becoming a leading center for the audiovisual industry.
In addition to its economic importance, this industry has a significant social and cultural impact, making it a vital part of the city’s future. This project promises to revitalize a historic site.
