Barcelona is preparing for an exciting change to its iconic Port Olímpic, with the transformation of a significant portion of the area into a vibrant new 8,000 square meter public plaza.
This project, which is part of the port’s comprehensive renovation, is scheduled for completion this summer, just in time for the start of America’s Cup sailing activities.
Since the ambitious renovation plan was announced in early 2023, work has been underway, and some of the new areas are already open to the public, such as the new promenade and the impressive Mirador de la Nova Bocana building.
However, one of the areas that will experience the most significant changes is the Moll de Mestral, where work began in May 2023 with the aim of revitalizing the maritime economy and promoting innovation in the blue sectors.
The works at the Port Olímpic
The dismantling of the vehicle entrance ramp on Marina Street marks the beginning of the final phase of the work, which will result in a large-scale public plaza with multiple shaded and recreational areas for residents and visitors alike.
This new plaza will become a focal point in Port Olímpic, hosting a variety of activities open to the public and serving as a dynamic space that fosters sports, community and business in the area.
Simultaneously, the redesign of the pedestrian access stairs on Marina Street itself will ensure better connectivity and accessibility within the port, facilitating interaction between the urban environment and the port area.
These actions are in addition to ongoing efforts to improve the permeability of the Port Olímpic and its integration with the rest of the city.
The changes to welcome the America’s Cup Sailing
The culmination of this project will coincide with an unprecedented event for Barcelona: the 37th edition of the America’s Cup, to be held in the city between August and October 2024.
This prestigious sporting event, considered the most important competition in the world of sailing, will be a historic moment for Barcelona, which strives to offer an exceptional experience for both participants and spectators.
In addition to the exciting competitions on the water, Barcelona will also host a variety of events and activities related to the America’s Cup, including a spectacular opening ceremony with live performances and stunning visual effects.
The city is expected to be filled with energy and excitement during this exciting period, which will further highlight the dynamic transformation of Port Olímpic and its role as one of Barcelona’s main tourist and cultural destinations.
